"Of course, my daughter. Spare no expense," her father said, his willingness to let her shop a sign of how pleased he was with this marriage. "Regina will go with you."

That was not going to happen. Francesca pretended to be pleased, but then paused as if struck by a disturbing thought. "Is she not newly with child? I understand expecting women need to nap, and the shopping trip I'm planning will be very taxing. After all, I have so little time to prepare, and she is so frail, we don't want anything to happen to her baby."

"Absolutely not," her father agreed, his brows coming together in concern.

Noting Oleander hovering out in the hallway, Francesca said, "I'll take Oleander, and a maid, of course."

"Not Rose," her father answered, a sign he had decided to take the maid and footman back. "She'll not be your personal servant."

"She will when I leave this house."

Her father's gaze met hers. For a second he appeared ready to argue, but then he nodded a curt assent. "And yes, you should take Oleander. I trust him."

Oleander had overheard his name mentioned and had moved to the door.

Francesca sensed he knew she was up to something. She attempted to send him a reassuring smile. She'd protect him. He'd not be treated as Rose and Jeremy had been.

"Oleander, order the coach for my daughter on the morrow," her father said expansively, his good humor returning. "She's on the hunt for wedding wear."

Oleander had no choice but to agree.

Francesca started out the door, but her father caught her arm. "And the necklace?" he prompted.

She glanced down at his hand. He released his hold, and she smiled, already feeling this new, heady power. She'd never give up the necklace. It was hers.
